Reviving Lahore’s Mughal Legacy

Reviving Lahore’s Mughal Legacy

08 - May , 2020

The “Magnificent Punjab” initiative, launched by CM Maryam Nawaz, is now entering a critical phase of technical restoration. While the program aims to protect 170 historical sites across the province, the work at the Tomb of Ali Mardan Khan stands out for its sheer complexity and attention to detail.

Managed by the Tourism, Archaeology & Museums Department (TAM), the current focus is on “Structural Consolidation”—the essential work needed to ensure the building stands strong for another century.

Precision in Every Detail
The restoration isn’t just about the main dome; it’s about the intricate elements that make Mughal architecture world-famous:

Corner Burjis: Teams are currently performing structural consolidation on the corner towers (Burjis). These are vital for the building’s symmetry and long-term stability.

Fresco Restoration: The delicate, centuries-old fresco work is being painstakingly brought back to life, ensuring the colors and patterns remain true to their original 17th-century roots.

Ghalib Kari: Restoration is also in progress for the Ghalib Kari (decorative molded plaster) on the exterior arches. This technique is what gives Mughal gateways their signature depth and elegance.

Preserving Our Identity
This project represents a shift in how Punjab treats its history. Under CM Maryam Nawaz’s vision, heritage is no longer being left to decay; it is being treated as a living trust for future generations. By reviving these “hidden gems,” the government is not only preserving our past but also creating a vibrant future for cultural tourism in Pakistan.

“Authentic conservation is a silent conversation with our ancestors. We are ensuring their voice is heard clearly once again.”
