A One-of-a-Kind Landmark
Located in Lahore, the Tomb of Ali Mardan Khan is unique—it is the only Mughal mausoleum of its specific architectural style in the city. Often overlooked in the past, this monument is now reclaiming its glory through a dedicated restoration drive by the Tourism, Archaeology & Museums Department (TAM).
Architectural Power & Serenity
Mughal architecture is defined by its “restraint and order,” a philosophy being carefully preserved in this project. The restoration isn’t just about repairs; it’s about returning the structure to its original state of serenity.
Key architectural highlights being restored include:
The Chattris: The elevated, dome-shaped pavilions that give the tomb its royal silhouette are being carefully refurbished.
Structural Consolidation: Specialized teams are strengthening the corner Burjis (towers) to ensure the building’s long-term stability.
Intricate Artistry: Expert craftsmen are working on the Ghalib Kari (molded plaster) and delicate fresco work on the exterior arches to bring back the vibrant detail of the 17th century.
Protection in Action
This initiative is a “protection and preservation” mission in its truest sense. By combining traditional craftsmanship with modern conservation techniques, the Punjab government is ensuring that this monument’s story endures for future generations.
“We are strategically safeguarding our history to retain its integrity, transforming ruins back into national treasures.”
